European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker showed a knack for stand-up comedy this morning, at a press conference in Brussels with Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and Commission vice president MaroÅ¡ Å efÄoviÄ, the European commissioner from Slovakia.
The trio were discussing how to bring Slovakia back into the European mainstream on migration policy when Juncker’s old Nokia phone rang.
Juncker presumed it was his wife calling, and unlike the U.S. Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani, who famously answered the phone when his wife called in the middle of a 2007 campaign speech to the National Rifle Association, Juncker declined the call.
Juncker quickly realized it was German Chancellor Angela Merkel, not his wife, that he had snubbed.
