Few MEPs have inspired the levels of both hatred and admiration that Le Pen has elicited during her time in politics. It runs in the family: Her father Jean-Marie (a fellow former MEP) is one of her few rivals on that metric. She was effective at using the Parliament — and, controversially, its resources — to achieve her domestic political ends. Ultimately those efforts saw her run off against Emmanuel Macron for the French presidency in 2017, when she achieved a record level of support for a far-right candidate, but was soundly beaten.
